Oxford research is working on a study regarding "myths and facts" about Denmark and are looking for more interviewees. Would you like to participate? They are looking especially for

A) expats with children (age 0-18) in Denmark where both parents are foreigners
B) expats aged 50 or more
C) expats working in the public sector and
D) Expats in living and working in Jutland

Please get in touch with Anne Sidenius at
asi (at) oxfordresearch.dk

The more Worktrotters are participating, the better.

Topic: Worktrotter guide highly recommended!

I got the Worktrotter Guide (German version)in May, about 3 months after I moved to Denmark and was immediately excited: While reading I found myself again and again nodding in agreement because I saw my own experiences reflected. But more important: I got a lot of information on DK and the Danes that was new and very useful to me! The book is well written and well organised (an index would be a little extra plus for a revision, but the existing "table of context" is already very comprehensive and helpful). All the practical information (addresses, websites etc.) included is concise and accurate.
The Worktrotter Guide is highly recommended to all internationals who plan to or already live in Denmark! :)

Thank you Dagmar!

Very interesting and useful course. Danish resume and application letter traditions are different from traditions back in my country, so now I undestand how to make my resume visible or Danish job market!

Topic: Family reunification got rejected !

Hello everybody! I need helps!
I am from Cambodia,my wife is from Vietnam but she's been in Denmark for 11 years and now she got the danish citizenship.I am 26 years olds and my wife's 27 years old. We got married in 2007 in Denmark but i was only able to apply for family reunification in august 2008 after graduating my Master degree in Russia.I could not wait until the proceeding completed becuase i want to see my 1 year old son whom i've never seen since he was born in may 2008. So i applied for the tourist visa in order to come to Denmark and waiting for the ruling for family reunification from the Danish Immigation Service. It took nearly a year to complete my case, and in july 2009 i got the letter from the Danish Immigration Service which rejected my resident permit and told me to go out of Denmark within 15 days. So i filed a complaint to the Ministry of Refugee, Immigration and Integration Affair and they allowed me to stay in Denmark until they have made the final decision within 5 months.
I want to ask you all what els dose the Dansih Immigration Service need in order to grant me the resident permit?
All the requirements i think we met: me and my wife both over 24 years old, my wife got a job as a cookassistant and a normal apartment to live together and the most important we have a 1 year old son.
The reason they rejected me because my link to Denmark is not greater to Cambodia or Vietnam. What dose it mean? it's so funny ,don't u think so?
Dose anyone have any good ideas to tell me what to do?
Thank so much for any help.

Worktrotter is a good guide. Ask your company to buy a few copies if there are many expats working. The best part of the guide is access to a large number of links on various aspects like getting a job, moving house, buying a car, childcare etc. Its hard to find another resource in denmark in English language which gives a lot of information in a one single place for non-danish speakers. I encourage you to buy this guide and support Dagmar's efforts at building an expat community.

The course was grate!!! I am very happy that I could assist. Everything was organized very professional. I get a lot of useful tips and information. I was a bit confused about how my application should look like. After the course a vision of my Cv and cover letter is much more clear. I am very motivated to write the new Cv and cover letter. And I will make it as danish would like to see it!!!
I truly recommend this course to everyone, who has problems with finding a job in Danmark:)

Topic: June CV and Application Course

I attended the June CV and Application Course set up by Worktrotter and WorkInDenmark and found it to be very useful. Both Dagmar and the two WorkInDenmark staff members had so much great advice, which can be of use to people who just moved to Denmark and for those who have spent some years here. All three of them moved to Denmark from other places in Europe, and it was great to get advice from people who started off in the same situation as I am in now.

Some of the most useful tips dealt with what a CV should include here in Denmark, as well as what should be addressed in the application letter. It was also interesting to hear about the typical Danish workplace and what a Danish job interview includes. And it was fun to meet and talk with the other participants! Great place to network, meet new friends, and learn a lot!

When moving to Denmark, the question of course comes up, what to take with you and what better to leave at 'home'.

I have started now [url=http://worktrotter.dk/component/content/article/22.html a list[/url]. Would be great, if we can make it as complete as possible. Please participate with your input, by adding it as reply to this post. I will extend the list as we go.

Thanks,

This guide is about the size of "Lonely Planet: Denmark," but presents
a completely different point of view: This is not your standard tourist
handbook for those "passing through," but rather a quick, comprehensive
reference for those planning to work and *live* in Denmark.

While the first part of the guide gives an overview of the country,
the people, and the history, the second hand-holds you through getting
settled in. Everything from applying for a visa and looking for work, to
finding an apartment and getting health care. Just have a look at the
table of contents to see how truly comprehensive this guide is:
http://worktrotter.dk/images/toc.pdf

Here are some examples of how the guide helped me:
- Cycling is a very popular and convenient way to get around here, but
what are the rules? I would naively have assumed my rules from home
(where a bike is considered a vehicle, just like a car, so you
follow the same rules of the road), but that's NOT how you ride a
bike in Denmark. Now I suppose I would have figured it out in time
(after a few near collisions or 500kr traffic tickets!), but it was
so much easier to flip to section 15.2 and start reading. Besides
getting an overview of the rules (and fines for violating said rules!)
I found links for buying used bikes, and tips about what kind of
bike locks to use (you have to use particular locks for insurance to
cover theft).
- Did you know that the ground floor is called "stue" (abbr ST) and that
the next floor up is referred to as the 1st floor? Are you prepared to
pay a huge security deposit plus a couple months of rent up front when
you move into your flat? Could you spot a scammer pretending to rent
you a flat just to get ahold of that large up-front sum? Have a read
of the guide and you'll be surprised how much there is to know about
renting/buying here.
- The Money Matters section was also quite handy when it came time to
open bank account and get myself a Dankort. There is also a lot of
handy information about how to read a bill and find the numbers you
need to make online electronic payments

There is so much more to say, but this post is getting rather lengthy.
The bottom line is that this guide has helped me out alot and I'm sure
it can do the same for you. It's handy to carry around, contains
colour photographs and maps, and is very easy to read. You wouldn't
backpack without your Lonely Planet, so don't relocate to Denmark
without your Worktrotter's Guide!

Hej,

do anybody know, or can advise, a hair cutter, which is not horrible expensive and speaks more then danish language(german would be nice 8) ) ?
Best location would be Østerbro, but with the bike I can also move myself towards city center or Fredriksberg.

I first moved to Denmark in 1972, in all. I have lived, worked (my Butt off), breathed Denmark for 30 years.

Now married for 21 years,(second, and last time round) to a Dane, with two sons, 17 and 20yrs, born in Denmark, danish citizens, now, because my family and I have lived and worked, (legally contracted and legally selfemployed) in Spain, as EU-Borgere/Citizens for 8 years, and returned (Home) to Denmark this past January 09, my wife and I have to apply, which we have done, for "Familiesammenføring".

After being sent from one official office to another, waiting for hours on end in line, with other good people from Ethiopia,Somalia and other far off exoctic destinations, giving over, a 28 paged document, we now wait for their, (Udlændingsstyrelse) decision, of whether I am a Candidate, to be "allowed" to live in this democratic country I have called home for almost 40 years.

Denmark has its own rules with regards to EU-Borgere and "Fribevæglighed" between European countries, and totally disregards the laws and paragraphs, that Denmark, under Danish Chairmanship ruled for and signed.

Now, reaching my 60th year, with my family, with 40 years of Danish culture in my blood, and my home town of London, a distant memory, I now, for the very first time in 40 years, feel and know what it is like to be a Foreigner, a Fremmedarbejder, an udlændning in this land of democracy and hope.

Despite lawyers, Borgernes Vejviserservice, SOLVIT, De Radikale Venstre´s næsteformand for Fredensborg, and other good folk, their dismay to how EU-Borgere are treated by Denmark, their country, and after 21 years of marriage, we are downgraded to Familiesammenføring, as my wife say´s, hun skamme sig at være dansk.

Topic: Just received the Worktrotter's Guide to Denmark...Fantastic!!!

I was eagerly awaiting the English version of the Worktrotter's Guide to Denmark, and I was not disappointed. In fact, being a new expat, I have been carrying the guide around with me while I'm settling in to life in Denmark. It is small enough to carry around with me in my backpack, and I find myself reaching for it all the time.

The worktrotter guide has saved me a great deal of time and effort when encountering a new problem, such as finding a school or how to go about buying a house. Instead of knowing nothing, I now have a great source of expat-specific knowledge to get me started in the right direction instead of wasting time on dead-ends. The insight here is particularly valuable because it has been written by an expat with the help of other expats, so the knowledge is even more appropriate than consulting a native Dane. Dagmar knows what the problems of being an expat in Denmark are, and her book has helped me get going here quickly! I only wish is that I had had this guide several months ago when I was initially struggling here. I ended up wasting a lot of time figuring out the basics of life in Denmark.

There is practical information that you can use everyday here, so keep it handy when you arrive. It is a great "pocket guide" to the frustrating problems you will frequently encounter as a new expat such as:

- finding work
- navigating the transportation systems
- understanding the Danish tax rules
- shopping tips to save money
- enrolling children in school (Danish and international)
- getting to know (and understand!) the Danes
- Danish language resources
- vehicle use and licensing information

There is no other resource I have found, online or off, where all of this information is brought together in one place and described in detail. The expat community is lucky to have this great guidebook!
