Make your applications targetted
Once upon a time it was OK to write up a "good" application and a "good" CV and then re-use them in hundreds of situations. Those times are long gone. Nowadays it is important to make your applications and CVs targetted. Phrase your application and your CV such that they match the company and more important the job you apply for.
The readers of your documentation (HR and line management) must get the feeling right away that you can and will help them in the new position. If this impression doesn't come to them fast they will put your application on the "Not so interesting" pile and you're probably out of the game.
Identify the most important keywords from the job offer and describe how you will cover those aspects and how you can help the company to get the needed results.
